GRID was a part of the beautiful Planted Cities at Stourhead National Trust in the UK.
Planted Cities is the first sustainable events and media platform promoting nature-based design. Their purpose is to reconnect people and spaces with nature. While running one of Europe’s leading design events, Design Junction founder Debs Spencer realised the industry had a problem: it was wasteful and environmentally damaging. Planted presents a more sustainable vision of the future by showcasing beautiful design today which improves our tomorrow.
The cube is lightweight (less than 1 kilo per cube) and can be enforced with cross-braces adding strenght and stability. It is just like building with your favorite building blocks. After use you disassemble the structure, screw by screw, and the GRIDs are ready to be re-used.
This is exactly what Spencer did with this exhibition, where GRID cubes were repurposed as an outdoor exhibit. Not only do the GRID cubes retain their strength throughout their lifetime, being able to support up to 1,3 tonnes with cross braces, but they disassemble easily and all components, whether that be cubes, cross braces, shelves etc. can be reused in a new configuration, just as the one in the Planted Cities exhibit.
GRID Cubes are also excellent for use as outdoor furniture and will weather all kinds of weather, from summer to winter.
The original cube is made of fibreglass-reinforced nylon (PA6, 30% glass), which can be converted into granules and recycled. The frame holds the same solid colour throughout the material. It is also UV and heat resistant.
